Nearly new condition; age and mileage limits depend on the auction house.
BEFORE YOU BID
Read the sheet.
Understand the car.
An auction sheet records the inspector’s findings. Use the grade, diagram and written notes together.

Start with these four checks
- Match the car
Check the lot, model, first registration, chassis number and mileage. Read any mileage warnings.
- Read both grades
The overall grade and interior rating describe different things. Interior letters often run from A (cleaner) to D or E (more wear).
- Follow the body diagram
Letters identify a type of damage; numbers usually indicate its size or severity. A1 is commonly a small scratch, not a damage-free panel.
- Read the inspector’s notes
Check repairs, corrosion, leaks, warning lights, smells and missing equipment. Seller comments are separate from the inspector’s findings.
THE BIG PICTURE
Auction grades, explained
These are common meanings, not a universal standard or a mechanical warranty. Always use the auction house’s own criteria.
Generally very clean, with minor marks. Read the individual notes.
Used condition with scratches, dents or previous cosmetic repairs.
More visible wear or repairs needed. Check the extent and cost.
Repair-history grades. Confirm which structural areas were repaired.
Special or poor-condition categories vary by auction. Ask us to clarify.
READ THE MARKS
Common damage codes
Numbers often run from 1 (smaller) to 3 or higher (larger). The exact thresholds and symbols vary.
- A
- Scratch
- U
- Dent
- W
- Repair or repaint marks
- S / C
- Rust / corrosion
- X
- Replacement needed
- XX
- Previously replaced
A replaced panel does not by itself prove structural damage. Equally, a high grade does not mean the car has no faults.
